As part of its journey of transformation, Olympia in west London commissioned a new pavilion led by artist and craftsperson Rio Kobayashi and engineers Webb Yates. “Off The Shelf” embraces this creative space in transition, offering a place where people, ideas, and even materials can meet and intermingle.

True to its name, the structure is a thoughtful piece of design, assembled from standard components cleverly weighted, prestressed, or clamped together, demonstrating an innovative approach to building. This method ensures stability and durability while allowing the pavilion to be easily disassembled back into its original, off-the-shelf parts, the bulk of which can be returned, reused, or resold.

The structural framework serves a dual purpose. It is not only a clever piece of engineering but also a versatile space for observation, exhibition, and entertainment. The formal and geometric shapes of the structure set the stage for “On the Shelf”, a lively program featuring exhibitions, workshops, performances, and interventions from friends and neighbours. This program transforms the pavilion into a vibrant hub of activity, infusing the space with colour, light, and energy that transcends its grid-like design. The blend of traditional and modern elements creates a unique atmosphere that invites visitors to explore, engage, and immerse themselves in the diverse range of activities on offer.

Curated by Company, Place, "Off The Shelf" will house "On The Shelf", a cultural programme that will bring the pavilion to life. The opening exhibition for "On The Shelf" featured an installation by artist and plant biologist Cynthia Fan. The interventions invite visitors to immerse themselves in the natural world through living sculptures and installations that challenge traditional perceptions of art and nature.

"On The Shelf" will also include a series of free weekend workshops exploring making as a tool to experience the interconnection between the natural world and material culture. Participants will engage directly with various materials and techniques, guided by an exciting group of practitioners sharing their insights and expertise.
